What are Hybrid Dentures?
While there are many reasons for the loss of natural teeth, there has typically only been one way of replacing multiple teeth easily: The removable dental prosthetics known as dentures. These devices are customized to fit a patient's mouth and gumline, providing the appearance of a full set of teeth.
Fortunately for most patients, the dental prosthetics of today are more comfortable and stable than the bulky predecessors of yesterday. Many wearers choose a hybrid option over a traditional removable prosthesis.
A hybrid denture combines a fixed bridge with a detachable denture. The removable or permanent prosthesis is connected to the gumline by way of dental implants, which are strategically placed in the jawbone. The number of implants required depends on the location of the denture and the structure of the patient's mouth.
For instance, it is not uncommon for the upper jaw to require four to eight implant posts, while the lower jaw may only need two. In either case, a hybrid denture is often a better choice than traditional prosthetic for a variety of reasons.
Differences between hybrid and traditional dentures
Compared with traditional dentures, a hybrid device can create a stronger hold and provides a more comfortable feel for the wearer. Also, this type of device does not require the use of adhesives because the prosthetic is screwed and secured into the fixed implant base.
Additionally, while a traditional dental prosthetic may impede the enjoyment of food and taste, the construction of their hybrid counterparts allow the denture to be placed closer to the gumline. This exposes the palate and can improve food enjoyment for patients.
Candidacy for hybrid placement
While a hybrid prosthetic may be ideal for some candidates, it is not the most effective option for everyone. A dentist or oral surgeon is likely to want to examine a patient before suggesting a hybrid procedure.
The benefits of hybrid devices may seem superior to the more conventional options. But, a traditional denture type does not require any form of invasive dental treatments. To receive a hybrid prosthesis, a patient must receive dental implants. Before implants can be placed a patient may require a bone graft to ensure the integrity of the jawbone.
These procedures require the cutting into and healing of a patient. Thus, a dental professional considers a variety of factors before approving any candidate for a hybrid denture, such as:
- Existing health issues, like heart disease, respiratory disease or diabetes
- Immune system strength
- Tobacco usage
Many people may dread the idea of dentures because they envision the bulky, uncomfortable prosthetics of the past. But, this technology has advanced in many areas. A hybrid denture can provide superior comfort and strength in comparison to older dental prosthetics. This is done by connecting the denture to a fixed bridge made from several dental implants. While the implant procedure may not be feasible for all patients, a hybrid denture may provide a natural-looking smile while offering a positive wearer experience.
