1. Tannin-rich foods and beverages

Some of the worst of such foods and beverages include coffee, red wine, sodas, tea, pasta sauce and beats. The coloring agents in some of these foods are so strong they can even discolor the containers you consume them with. Cosmetic dentists recommend brushing or rinsing the mouth with water after consuming any of these foods.

2. Sugar-rich foods and beverages

Sugar is acidic in nature and it eats away at tooth surfaces. Oral bacteria also consume sugars in the mouth and excrete acids that damage teeth. Sugar has a sticky consistency, so it sticks to teeth a lot longer than most foods do, allowing it to cause more damage.

Teeth that are damaged by acids will eventually succumb to tooth decay. Cosmetic dentists recommend rinsing the mouth with water after consuming sugary things.

3. Hard food items

Eating hard food items like hard candies puts a lot of stress on tooth surfaces. Affected teeth might end up breaking or falling apart if the habit persists. Avoiding hard foods becomes even more important if a person has oral restorations in their mouth. While most of these cosmetic restorations are quite durable, none are as sturdy as real teeth.

The importance of oral hygiene

Avoiding the types of foods listed above will make it easier to keep teeth in good condition, but practicing good oral hygiene is just as important. Combining the two helps to keep teeth healthy and improves the longevity of any restorations the patient already has.

Good oral hygiene includes brushing at least two times each day. Dentists recommend flossing once a day to keep interdental spaces clean. Regular visits to a dentist also play an important role when it comes to keeping teeth healthy and looking their best. It gives the dentist the opportunity to examine the patient's mouth and to fix any issues detected before it morphs into something bigger. It also gives the dentist an opportunity to educate the patient about how to properly take care of their teeth.
