Home Care Products and Regimens for Patients With Gum Disease

Millions of people in the United States struggle with gum disease, and it can lead to other, more concerning issues if treatment is not provided in a timely manner. Fortunately, however, it has never been easier to treat gum disease at home, and there are several home care products and regimens that are incredibly effective at treating gum disease

Home care for gum disease

Treating gum disease requires decisive action, and much of the work happens not at the dentist office, but at home by practicing good oral hygiene. The following are four easy and effective home care products to try when treating gum disease, including information on how to use each one. 

Electric toothbrush

Most are familiar with what an electric toothbrush is, but far too few individuals utilize it, especially people who are dealing with symptoms of gum disease. The fact is electric toothbrushes often make brushing easier, and they work incredibly well at removing plaque and tartar from the surface of gums while helping the person not place too much pressure on their gums and causing increased irritation. 

Dental floss

It is important to implement flossing into your daily regimen, and doing so can be a great way to combat gum disease and gain healthier gums over time. There are certain areas in between teeth that are hard to reach while brushing, and in some instances, mouthwash might not be enough to remove food particles. Floss works to remove particles and bacteria from the gum line and between teeth, reducing the risk of gum disease long-term. 

Fluoride mouthrinse

Fluoride is the best friend of tooth enamel, and it works well at fighting off bacteria inside the mouth. Healthier teeth often mean healthier gums, and using a fluoride mouthwash is a great way to treat gum disease at home. Additionally, using mouthwash works to remove food particles and kill remaining bacteria after brushing and flossing. For best practice, be sure to use a fluoride mouthrinse once in the morning, at night and after a meal when possible.

Oral irrigators

An oral irrigator is one of the best ways to treat gum disease at home, but unfortunately, not many patients use it to their advantage. An oral irrigator works by providing a high-pressure stream of water in the mouth to remove food particles and bacteria in between teeth and along the gum line. When used along with consistent brushing, flossing and mouthwash routine, gum disease can be treated and prevented, especially when also making regular visits to the dentist for routine cleaning.
