A cosmetic dentist can help you improve your smile by correcting the color of your teeth. This type of dentistry exists to correct issues that affect the appearance of your smile. The appearance of your teeth is one of the first things other people will notice in social interactions, so it is important to have your teeth looking their best.
A cosmetic dentist can fix any teeth stains and discoloration you are dealing with using one of the following methods.
Teeth whitening
Teeth whitening treatments are the most effective way to get rid of most tooth stains. This procedure involves coating your teeth with a bleaching agent, such as hydrogen peroxide and leaving it in place for about an hour so it can remove stains. Your dentist may use a laser to speed up the chemical reaction.
Teeth whitening usually involves using a custom-made mouthpiece to dispense the whitening product. The product will be put into the mouthpiece, and you will be instructed to bite down on it. Doing this will immerse all your teeth in the solution or gel, which removes stains from the different layers of a tooth. You may even see noticeable results after just one treatment.
Composite bonding
Composite bonding is done using resins that are made of glass and plastic. They can match the color of your natural teeth and can be used to cover up stains. The way this works is that your discolored tooth or teeth will be prepared with an etching solution that roughens its surface. This strengthens the bond between your tooth and the composite. The composite is then applied to your tooth until any stains and discoloration are covered up, and then it is hardened using a curing light.
Veneers
Veneers are tooth-shaped shells that are cemented to the front of each tooth. They are a great option to cover up stains. However, putting in veneers often requires the removal of natural tooth enamel. This is done so that the veneers will not make your teeth look unnaturally bulky. Since removing tooth enamel is irreversible, your tooth will always need to be protected by a veneer restoration.
The procedure of having veneers placed often requires two visits to the dentist. During the first appointment, your teeth will be prepared and fitted with temporary veneers. During the second appointment, your dentist will remove the temporary veneers and cement your custom permeant veneers to your teeth.
Crowns
Dental crowns are another tooth restoration option that can cover up stains and discoloration. Crowns are used to whiten teeth that are covered with stains on all sides. As with dental veneers, crowns also require the removal of tooth enamel, but the crown covers the visible part of the tooth, thereby hiding its flaws.
These are the options your cosmetic dentist may present to you if you want to correct the appearance of your discolored and stained teeth. Consult with your dentist to determine which choice is right for you.
